Frequently Asked Questions

Customer FAQ

How do I find the nearest Coinstar machine?

By using the Machine Locator in the upper right corner of your screen, you can search by U.S. city, state and zipcode, or by city or post code in the U.K.
For Canadian locations, visit Coinstar.ca and search by Postal Code.

I saw a promotional offer mentioned on the machine—how can I find out more about it?

Coinstar is pleased to offer valuable discounts to our customers periodically. Information about current promotional offers is posted on our Web site at www.coinstar.com and on our customer service line at 1-800-928-CASH. You can also learn about special offers by visiting a Coinstar machine near you.

Is there a charge to use a Coinstar® machine?

Yes. For Coins to Cash™ service, we charge an 8.9% processing fee in the United States, a 9.8% processing fee in Canada, and a 7.9% processing fee in the U.K. Some retailers or financial institutions may choose to subsidize this fee. Coin counting is free in select regions of the U.S. if you convert your change to a nationally-branded gift card or eCertificate such as Starbucks®, Borders®, iTunes, Pier1 Imports® or Amazon.com®. To find out if this new ‘no fee’ service is available in your area, go to the machine locator, advanced search.

Do I need to sort my coins before using the Coinstar Center?

No. Coinstar accepts any quantity of unsorted coins in your local currency. Coinstar's patented technology allows our processors to filter out foreign coins and other debris. However, these items may not be returned by our processors so it is a good idea to remove such items as Eisenhower silver dollars; 1943 steel pennies; foreign, damaged or sticky coins; pure silver coinage and other debris from your stored coins.

Do I need to roll my change before taking it to Coinstar?

No. There is no need to roll your loose change in wrappers. Coinstar counts unsorted change in minutes and then prints out a voucher that can be exchanged for cash or groceries at the checkout.

Do I have to redeem the voucher at the store where I cash in my coins?

Yes. Because Coinstar reimburses each store for the transactions that are processed through the Coinstar Center at their location, we instruct our store partners not to cash vouchers processed at a different location.

Does the Coinstar voucher need to be redeemed for cash right away (the day of the transaction)?

Some retail locations require vouchers to be redeemed the same day or within a certain timeframe. Please check with the store before leaving with an un-cashed voucher.

What if I have a large amount of coins?

If you are an individual and think that you have more than $3,000 in coins, we may be able to provide special assistance. Please call our Customer Service department at 1-800-928-CASH. If you are a non-profit organization, see below.

How fast does the Coinstar machine count coins?

The machine counts up to 600 coins per minute!

Does Coinstar offer free coin counting or a reduced fee for non-profit groups?

Coinstar is happy to offer qualified non-profit organizations in the U.S. the opportunity to apply for a reduced fee. To qualify, non-profits must have 501(C)(3) status and at least $1,800 in change. Please email coinsthatcount@coinstar.com for more information.

What is Coins that Count®?

Coins that Count is a partnership among Coinstar, non-profit organizations, and our retail partners. The Coins that Count donation feature allows customers to donate their spare change to a participating non-profit organization and immediately receive a tax-deductible receipt for the full value of their donation.
